SAMUEL PEPYS (1633-1703) Naval Administrator, MP and Diarist
14 BUCKINGHAM STREET, LONDON WC2 Pepys diary covers such monumental episodes as The Great Fire of London, the Coronation of Charles II and the London plague.
There is some debate about the original spelling of Pepys, but the below extract from his diary confirms that it was in fact an onomatopoeic nickname for him and should be rightly spelled Samuel Peeps.
It having been a very cold night last night I had got some cold, and so in pain by wind, and a sure precursor of pain is sudden letting off farts.
