DESCRIPTION: THOMAS DE QUINCEY (1785-1859) Author 36 TAVISTOCK STREET, LONDON WC2 “Whereas wine disorders the mental faculties, opium introduces amongst them the most exquisite order, legislation and harmony. Wine robs a man of self-possession; opium greatly invigorates it.” (Thomas De Quincey) Best known for his book “Confessions of an English Opium Eater”, this blue plaque reveals more than most. For some reason his name is spelt QUINCY, which is the first known reference to a drug addict ‘dropping an E’.
