DESCRIPTION: SIR CHARLES CHAPLIN (1889-1977) Actor and Director 39 METHLEY STREET, LONDON SE11 “That is just the merit of the common lodging-house, which is, it must be admitted, neither morally nor materially the most savoury place in the world. The criminal must live and sleep somewhere, and he is most easily tracked when he lives and sleeps in one of these houses.” (London Evening News 1888 on Methley Street) Now described by local estate agents as “a charming street of flat fronted Victorian cottages”, when Chaplin lived there in 1898 the charm was somewhat marred by the proximity of a pickling factory, chronic poverty and an abattoir. No Estate Agents adverts of the period seem to have survived
