DESCRIPTION: CAPTAIN ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912) Antarctic Explorer 56 OAKLEY STREET, LONDON SW3 “Great God! This is an awful place.” (Robert Falcon Scott) After facing incredible hardships and extreme weather, Scott of the Antarctic finally reached his destination, the South Pole, only to find the Norwegian flag had been placed there just a month before. On the return journey further hardships were endured resulting in the party meeting their tragic ends. Perhaps most famous, the last words of expedition member Lawrence Oates who walked to his death uttering the poignant line “I am just going outside, I may be some time”. A phrase still frequently heard in the streets around Scott’s old home as the locals leave to try and find a vacant resident parking space.
